Mrs. Rene Oosthuizen - Lecturer

Rene is currently studying towards her DPhil in Public Administration through the Department of Politics and Governmental Studies at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Her research focuses on how tourism can be used as a toll for sustainable local economic development.

Rene holds a Master's degree in Public Management and a BA Honours Degree in Public Administration. Rene's degrees and subsequent work experience focused extensively on the implementation and assessment of Social and Economic Development policies, and Advanced Strategic Management as effective tools to ensure sustainable service delivery.

In 2009, Rene was employed as a lecturer in the Department of Public Management at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Prior to that she was employed as a lecturer at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) for six years. Her areas of specialisation include Advanced Strategic Management, Public Policy Management, Programme and Project Management, and Research and Information Management. She was the project manager for Planning for Development for the Institute for Sustainable Governance (ISGAD) at the NMMU. She was also involved in the Bhisho capacity building programme for provincial and municipal officials. Ndlambe municipal officials formed part of this group. She was the project manager for Advanced Strategic Management offered to the Provincial Treasury by the South African Management and Development Institute. She was also one of the project managers (ISGAD, the Institute for Sustainable Governance) on a project called Social Security Mode Public Service Delivery, for the National Department of Social Development in 2005.
 
She has also been previously employed as a social and economic researcher for Development Research Africa (DRA). In 2004 she was the regional election researcher for the SABC.
 
She is a qualified assessor and participated in the first ever United States In-Country Study In Pretoria. The US Embassy in Pretoria selected 20 participants from South Africa and the course focused on improving public policy in South Africa and lessons to be learned from the USA.
 
Rene is an academic and policy analysis/development researcher with experience in conducting interviews, report writing, policy analysis, social and economic research and development monitoring. She has designed and implemented the above in the academic, non-governmental and governmental sectors, specialising in social and economic development issues.
 
Rene is also the faculty advisor for the SIFE (Students in Free Enterprises) Stenden South Africa team.
